Henry Gerber House
The Henry Gerber House, now a National Historic Landmark, is recognized for its pivotal role in LGBTQ+ history.
Situated at 1710 North Crilly Court, it was the home of Henry Gerber in 1924-1925, where he founded the Society for Human Rights (SHR)—the first chartered organization in the U.S. dedicated to advocating for homosexual rights.
As SHR's secretary, Gerber composed the mission statement and managed its affairs from this location.
Following a police raid in 1925, which led to Gerber's arrest and the seizure of his typewriter used for SHR's documents, the house has since become a symbol of the early struggle for gay rights in America.
