AIDS Garden Chicago
AIDS Garden Chicago stands as a poignant tribute and the city's inaugural public monument dedicated to remembering the early days of the HIV epidemic in Chicago and honoring the ongoing battle against the disease. Nestled along the scenic shores of Lake Michigan, just south of Belmont Harbor, this 2.5-acre sanctuary, dubbed a "park with purpose," occupies the historic site of the Belmont Rocks—a location steeped in local lore and significance.
Opened officially to the public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 2, 2022, after ground-breaking in June 2021, the Garden's development is a testament to the community's resilience and commitment to never forget those affected by HIV/AIDS. The highlight of its first phase is the captivating 'Self-Portrait,' a 30-foot sculpture by the legendary artist and activist Keith Haring, which anchors the space with its powerful presence.
AIDS Garden Chicago is a welcoming space for reflection, education, and community gathering, inviting visitors from all walks of life to explore its grounds, remember the past, and inspire continued advocacy for those affected by HIV/AIDS.
